Designing to EN 13445 is only half of what a European project needs. The other half is knowing which conformity assessment category the equipment falls into, which module applies, and what a notified body will ask to see โ because that decides the schedule as much as the calculation does.

Design by formula and design by analysis
EN 13445-3 offers both routes. Design by formula covers standard components; design by analysis handles what the formulas do not, and is the route to take when a geometry would otherwise be penalised by a conservative rule.

Classification under the Directive
Category follows from the fluid group, the equipment type and the product of pressure and volume โ or pressure and nominal size for piping. It is a short calculation with long consequences: it decides whether a notified body is involved at all, and if so how deeply.
