    ASME VIII Division 1 Design

    ASME Section VIII Division 1 is a design-by-rule code: it covers standard geometry with formulas, and stops where the geometry stops being standard. Most of the engineering effort sits at that boundary โ€” the nozzle that is too close to a seam, the load that the rules do not address, the support that carries more than the shell can take locally.

    Techso designs and verifies pressure vessels to Division 1, and takes the cases the rules leave open into finite element analysis rather than into an assumption.

    What we calculate

    • Cylindrical and spherical shells under internal pressure
    • Formed heads: ellipsoidal, torispherical, hemispherical and conical transitions
    • External pressure and vacuum, with stiffening ring design
    • Openings and reinforcement, including closely spaced and oblique nozzles
    • Bolted flanged connections, standard and non-standard
    • Supports: saddles, skirts, legs and lugs, with local shell checks

    Materials, MAWP and low temperature

    The design temperature range decides the material as much as the pressure does. The minimum design metal temperature is where projects most often get caught: a material that is acceptable on paper may require impact testing that the fabricator has not planned for, and finding out at the mill is expensive.

    • Corrosion allowance and its distribution across components
    • Joint efficiency and the radiography extent it implies

    Beyond the rules

    Division 1 does not address every load. Nozzle loads from connected piping, wind and seismic action on tall vertical vessels, lifting and transport, and local stresses at supports all need to be verified separately โ€” and this is where most of our work on pressure equipment actually starts.
